Petrol, diesel, hybrid or electric: which to choose
Last updated: 19 June 2026
Each fuel type suits a different driver. Compare petrol, diesel, hybrid and electric on cost, mileage and use to pick the right used car.
There is no single best fuel
The right choice depends on your mileage, the type of journeys you make and where you can refuel or charge. Match the fuel to your driving, not to the trend of the moment.
Petrol
Cheaper to buy, simpler and quieter, and well suited to lower mileage and town driving. Slightly higher fuel use on long trips than diesel, but fewer expensive emissions parts to fail.
Diesel
Efficient and strong for high annual mileage and motorway driving. But on short, urban trips the emissions systems (DPF, EGR) can clog and become costly — avoid a city-only diesel.
Hybrid
Great for mixed and urban driving, with low fuel use and no range anxiety. Check the condition of the hybrid battery and that both the electric and petrol systems work smoothly.
Electric
Lowest running costs and ideal if you can charge at home, but purchase price and battery health are key. Confirm real-world range and remaining battery warranty.
Match it to your mileage
Low mileage / city: petrol or hybrid. High motorway mileage: diesel or hybrid. Home charging and short-to-medium trips: electric. Be honest about your real pattern.
Inspect the right things
Each type has specific checks — DPF on diesels, battery health on hybrids and EVs, belts and chains on petrols. A CarGuard AI inspection screens bodywork and engine condition whatever the fuel.
